Live/Work Space
Project Narrative
40 Frames
Since 2000, 40 Frames has been dedicated to preserving the art of 16mm filmmaking and exhibition. Our projects have involved the exhibition 16mm films (presenting over 200 films, by 85 filmmakers, and directed over $20,000 in payments to filmmakers exhibiting their work), the development of an on-line technical resource directory (www.16mmdirectory.org), acting as a repository for local film collections, and providing on-going technical consultation and training to individuals, educators, and organizations.
Live/Work Space
After a long search, and encountering many expensive options in the market, we decided to explore a unique and more affordable solution by acquiring an in-fill lot and building our home. We wanted something that was unique in terms of layout and heating system, but also simple and easily replicable as a model for others wanting to build a home that provides flexible work space for a home-based business and/or artistic creation.
Passivhaus and Green Building
Low operating cost for a home makes both ecological and economic sense. Minimizing our utilities overhead will permit funds to be diverted to artistic projects, time for volunteering in the community, and direct additional funds toward mortgage payments and building equity. By utilizing the Passivhaus approach to building construction (super insulated, air-tight building envelop), our home will achieve an energy performance that is 70-90% better than the Oregon Residential Special Code (ORSC).
